Position: Superintendent – Human Resources

Location: Kapuskasing, ON – Papermill

Salary: $115,000.00 - $125,000.00 annually

Requirements:

  • Language: English (spoken and written) and French is an asset.

  • Education: Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related field.

  • Certified Human Resources Professional designation is an asset.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in Human Resources.

  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Mill Manager.

  • Supervise and guide two direct reports.

  • Oversee administration of employee pension and benefit programs, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal requirements.

  • Manage relationships with third-party providers (e.g., insurance companies, pension distributors) to ensure efficient service delivery.

  • Participate in the review and enhancement of benefit plans to align with organizational goals and employee needs.

  • Provide an effective Human Resource service and support to Kapuskasing (Newsmill) in the following areas: Personnel, and Site Protection, Training, Labour / Employee Relations, Salary / Benefits Administration, and Public Relations, while ensuring compliance with Kap Paper Inc. principles and guidelines, the Collective Agreement and all applicable legislation.

  • Ensure effective employee relations with both union and non-union employees in compliance with the collective agreement(s), regulations, and policy.

  • Prepare labour negotiations agenda and actively participate in collective bargaining sessions.

  • Represent the mill at arbitration proceedings.

  • Represent the mill on local public relations matters.

  • Provide and ensure effective advice is provided to line supervision and area managers on matters associated with labour/employee relations, and act as company spokesperson, as required, during grievance and discipline meetings.

  • Manage and coordinate the selection and recruitment process to ensure the right people are hired for the right roles, within established policy and procedure.

  • Manage effective internal and external communications in conjunction with the appropriate departmental manager.

  • Ensure the effective administration of the union and non- union benefit and retirement programs.

  • Administer the Employee and Family Assistance Program, Job Classification Plan and Job Evaluation Plan.

  • Oversee the site’s training program to ensure that objectives are met, consistent with policy and procedure.

  • Ensure compliance with the Management System and report non-conformances when identified.

  • Prepare and/or approve department budgets to ensure they are met, and that variances are explained with appropriate corrective action taken as needed.

  • Ensure direct reports demonstrate effectiveness in role and are provided development opportunities.

  • Advise and/or recommend changes to Human Resources policies, procedures, and processes.

  • Ensure the hiring process is compliant with company policies and legal requirements, including conducting background checks and verifying references.

  • Promote a positive work environment by encouraging open communication and fostering healthy working relationships.

  • Administer employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, leave policies, and wellness programs.

  • Maintain and update employee records in compliance with legal requirements and company policies.

  • Contribute to the development of HR strategies that manage the organization’s overall business objectives.

  • Deliver effective consultative services to managers / group leaders / employees related to problem solving processes or the application of problem-solving tools resulting in an improvement in business results or enhanced profitability.

  • Assist managers, identify and apply appropriate problem-solving process methods and tools making use of data and facts for decision making.

  • Facilitate group discussions to ensure a participative leadership style that allows employees to contribute to the maximum of their ability through the problem-solving processes.

  • Support team leaders in developing a work environment that allows group members to exercise their collective knowledge in developing practical solutions to the problem.

  • Develop and maintain Human Resource Development systems and processes to allow the organization to maximize the potential of employees and to provide for future staffing needs, including performance appraisal system, mentoring processes, talent pool assessment process – assessment of individuals’ current and future capability.

  • Provide effective support and recommendations to managers and employees in the administration of salaries and compensation systems and coordinate all necessary documentation.
