Position: Superintendent – Health and Safety
Location: Kapuskasing, ON – Papermill
Salary: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 annually
Requirements:
- Language: English (spoken and written) and French is an asset. 
- Education: University degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Equivalent. 
- Experience: 3 – 5 years experience in the field or related field. 
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and standards. 
- Excellent communication skills. 
Responsibilities:
- Report to the Mill Manager 
- Identify innovative ideas and implement activities to seek improvements, to promote awareness and provide a safe workplace. 
- Develop and Support Health and Safety programs and ensure the effective implementation and maintenance through the accountable managers. 
- Act as liaison with external service providers. 
- Act as a Health, Safety and Plant Protection resource person to all site employees. 
- Provides professional in-plant first aid to sick or injured employees in the course of their duties. 
- Participate in various committees to ensure the consistent application of health, safety and plant protection practices. 
- Communicate Health, Safety and Plant Protection regulations and internal policies and procedures. 
- Support compliance with collective agreements and sound union / management / employee relations. 
- Maintain a communications program to keep all employees informed. 
- Maintain and distribute H & S Management Systems, policies, and procedures. 
- Prepare and meet Health, Safety, Plant Protection budgets, explain variances and take appropriate corrective action as required. 
- Identify and keep up to date with new regulations and innovations to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of H & S services. 
- Develop, manage, and maintain a system to provide safety statistics and reports to identify trends and preventative action while minimizing costs. 
- Identify, recommend, and deliver safety and Emergency Response Team (ERT) training as necessary. 
- Audit all safety activities. 
- Establish, maintain, and apply systems and training to provide effective ERT services in compliance with Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification (OHSAS) (iso 18001) standards. 
- Delivers a comprehensive professional health service to employees at the worksite with focus on physical assessment, health promotion, health maintenance, occupational health, medical screening and surveillance and injury prevention and treatment. 
- Plans, implements, and evaluates health screening, promotion, and counseling at the worksite to assist employees in maintaining or achieving safer and healthier lifestyles. 
- Manages the Modified Work Programs to ensure safe return to work of employees and maintain communication with the medical community. 
- Maintains CPR and F.A. Instructor status to ensure that qualified CPR and F.A. personnel are available at all assigned locations and employees receive training to meet their personal and possible emergency needs. 
- Provides security over all medical records to assure confidentiality. Permits disclosure of medical information only with proper authorization. 
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure adherence to safety standards. 
- Monitor the use of chemicals, machinery, and other equipment to ensure safe practices are followed. 
- Implement and oversee ergonomics programs and provide recommendations for workstation adjustments. 
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to health and safety training, incidents, inspections, and certifications. 
- Other duties as assigned.
