Position: Supervisor – Effluent & Yard

Location: Kapuskasing, ON – Papermill

Salary: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 annually

Requirements:

  • Language: English (spoken and written) and French is an asset.

  • Education: College diploma or University degree in Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering or related field.

  • 3 – 5 years experience in the field or related field.

  • Strong knowledge of effluent treatment processes.

  • Excellent leadership qualities and team management abilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Utilities Superintendent.

  • Support compliance with collective agreement and sound union / management / employee relations.

  • Maintain a communications program to keep your team informed regarding mill and department priorities.

  • Ensure proper administration of the workplace by maintaining effective internal and external relations, complying with legal requirements, managing finances, inventory, information, maintenance, and human resources.

  • Maintain general workplace skills so that operating personnel are competent to apply principles of basic and applied math, biology, and chemistry, read and understand trade drawings, operate computer systems and troubleshoot equipment.

  • Establish proper sampling and laboratory procedures, analyze test results, and make appropriate process adjustments.

  • Ensure that effective operational control systems and procedures are in place to monitor and maintain unit operations and equipment for pre-treatment, primary treatment, biological treatment, clarification, sludge handling and disposal, chemical handling, and ancillary systems.

  • Advise and/or recommend changes or opportunities, outside of direct area of accountability that will contribute to optimizing the short and long-term site objectives to colleagues.

  • Identify opportunities or risks related to manufacturing costs or processes and work effectively with colleagues to take appropriate action.

  • Report environmental incidents to regulatory authorities as required.

  • Implement CAPEX, preventative maintenance and production support systems to ensure reliable operation and longevity of steam plant assets.

  • Provide input on the selection of new capital equipment to be installed in the Effluent Plant and Yard.

  • Establish proper sampling and laboratory procedures analyze test results and make appropriate process adjustments.

  • Ensure that effective operational control systems and procedures are in place to monitor and maintain unit operations and equipment, primary treatment, biological treatment, clarification, sludge handling and disposal, chemical handling, and ancillary systems.

  • Ensure compliance (monitoring, testing, establishing QA/QC procedures, and/or reporting) required by Federal/Provincial environmental legislation, Certificates-of-Approval and regulations with respect to effluent, storm water and steam production.

  • Provide technical support and direction to other departments about the best environmental practices.

  • Provide training to effluent Operations on testing procedures and operation of laboratory equipment.

  •  Ensure required environmental laboratory safety procedures are followed.

  • Provide technical support towards maintaining newsprint key quality parameters.

  • Look after Yard operations, road management, including snow/sand removal, landfill waste disposal, metal disposal, lawn care and road maintenance equipment.

  • Set up relief for planned absences.

  • Coordinate and perform regulatory sampling and shipments to eternal labs.

  • Input and submit monthly, quarterly, annual regulatory reports.

  • Provide and ensure effective advice is provided to line supervision and area Managers
